Home Shopping Checklist
Home Shopping Checklist
House hunting is one of the most exciting parts of buying a home. The current market is competitive, so it helps to create a wish-list to make your house hunting experience as productive as possible.
Know Your Finances
Sit down and take stock of how much money you have coming in, what is going out
each month, and what you feel comfortable spending. The best way to do this is
to get pre-approval, so you know you’re in the right ballpark with your budget.
Know
Your “Must Haves”
Make a list of your priorities before you start shopping. If you absolutely
need a 3-bedroom home with at least two bathrooms, then a 2-bedroom with one
bathroom will never be a good fit. Here are a few points to take into
consideration.
- Location – Think about schools, job, transportation, shopping
- Type of Home – Single family, condo, duplex, one-story or two
- Number of bedrooms and bathrooms
- Kitchen – Appliances, cabinetry, granite countertops
- Yard – Outdoor entertainment, space for a dog or kids, gardens
- Garage
- Energy efficiency
Once you have your list, break it down into categories of “Must Haves,” “Needs” and “Wants.” The “Must Haves” are things you absolutely can’t live without. The “Wants” would be things that would be nice to have, but not entirely critical to your decision process.
